David Oyarzun defended her Thesis at the University of the Basque Country

  David Oyarzun defended her thesis, 'Representation of virtual worlds’ inhabitants: A framework for the conceptual definition of avatars', last July 16th Obtaining the degree of Doctor Engineer in Computer Science. 
Participating at AMDO 2010

  Two of the main researchers at Vicomtech, David Oyarzun and Dr. Luis Unzueta, will participate at the VI Articulated Motion and Deformable Objects Conference AMDO 2010 to be held next July 7 to 9 in Andratx, Majorca. David Oyarzun will present the partial results of the PUPPET project. This project mixes virtual reality and real image with real-time voice analysis. On his side, Dr. Luis Unzueta will be one of the chairmen at the conference and he will explain some of the researches done about human motion pattern recognition for human-computer interaction. 
Vicomtech-IK4, participates in an event in Aquitaine
  2010/06/22 
  June 22 Vicomtech-IK4 attended the 3rd Company-Researcher Encounter within the ICT field held at the Congress Palace in Bordeaux (France). This event was organized by INNOVALIS, the Innovation Agency in the region of Aquitaine. The main objective was to show the companies in Aquitaine development chances suggested by the collaboration between companies and the university-research-world through statements and specific sessions. On Vicomtech-IK4's side Dr. Céline Paloc, head of the eHealth and Biomedical Applications department, and Dr. Luis Kabongo, one of the main researchers in said department, attended this event. Vicomtech-IK4's model was shown there and different contacts with different companies and institutions were made too. Some collaboration agreements and commitments were also settled between Vicomtech-IK4 and various entities from the Aquitaine region. 
Vicomtech-IK4 participates in the HAIS 2010 Conference
  2010/06/21 
  HAIS 2010 has gathered 123 scientists from 23 different countries. They have presented the latest news on ‘hybrid artificial intelligent systems’ in San Sebastian. The conference, held at the Miramar Palace from June 23 to 25, was organized by the University of the Basque Country (UPV-EHU) and the universities of Burgos and Salamanca. Vicomtech-IK4 was both participant and sponsor of this event. 
Vicomtech-IK4 visits USA
  2010/06/20 
  David Oyarzun, head of the 3D Animation, Interactive Virtual Environments and HCI department, visited West Virginia from June 21 to 25. This trip was organized by the Association of Industries for Electronic and Information Technologies (GAIA-TEIC cluster). The main objective of this visit was to promote and stimulate new R&D joint-projects between North American and Basque institutions. Vicomtech-IK4 and GAIA were accompanied by other two associate members of the cluster: Ingesea and Andago.

Vicomtech- IK4 participates in METZ Project

  The consortium made up by Batura, Euskaltel, Goiena Komunikazio Zerbitzuak and Itelazpi, together with the collaboration of Vicomtech-IK4 and Oñati’s Tourism Bureau, has set off a mobile tourist guide service. This service enables the user to see a variety of TV programmes with tourist content, as well as to access WAP sites with different tourist services.   Next December 9 through 12 an important international congress on Storytelling will be taking place in Portugal (ICIDS 2009 International Conference on Interactive Digital Storytelling).
Within this congress, our colleague David Oyarzun will present a workshop about the specification of a standard for avatar identity (Workshop: Creating the Goodies and Baddies of the Story: Specification of an Interoperable and Reusable Avatar Identity). The specification of this avatar identity is part of the incipient standard MPEG-V.
The aim of this workshop is to get the participation of different agents in order to analyze, from different points of view, said standard. On the other hand, future applications based on this standard will also be discussed and the future actions and possible projects will also be set out. AnHitz project, awarded
  2009/10/21 
  The demonstration of AnHitz, a strategic research project in language, speech and virtual reality technologies led and coordinated by Vicomtech-IK4, was awarded at the international CLA'09 (Computational Linguistics - Applications) workshop held in Poland last week. The AnHitz demo received two awards: best demonstration in information retrieval and best demonstration of the CLA workshop. 
Vicomtech-IK4 will support the linguistics master’s degree of the UPV-EHU

  Vicomtech-IK4 will participate in the linguistics master's degree that will be given at the University of the Basque Country. Four of the main researchers at Vicomtech-IK4 will give lessons on subjects related to computational linguistics.

Vicomtech-IK4 speaker at the 11th Protégé Conference
  2009/06/19 
  Vicomtech-IK4 will be the only representative of Spain at the 11th Protégé Conference, where Dr. Carlos Toro will present next June 24 his paper 'User Experience, Ambient Intelligence, and Virtual Reality in an Industrial Maintenance Domain using Protégé'.

This conference, organized by the Stanford University and taking place this year in Amsterdam, is one of the most important forums where researchers of all the world share their last advances on the applied semantics.

This way Vicomtech-IK4 shows their knowledge regarding these tools, on the semantic CAD line, and will present the last advances developed concerning the of knowledge-engineering-based techniques within industrial maintenance environments.

He will be talking about URC/UCH as a key technology within the interoperability and accessibility fields.

Vicomtech-IK4, participating in a leading research project for Alzheimer therapy
  2009/01/21 
  Vicomtech-IK4 participates in the research project MIND - A Multidisciplinary Approach to Alzheimer’s Disease - within the Cenit program framework of the Ministry of Science and Innovation. The project, representing an investment of 27 million euros and with a four-year duration, seeks to establish markers that will enable early diagnosis of Alzheimer and other types of neurodegenerative diseases. All of the companies involved in the project have expertise in the study of Alzheimer’s disease, and are supported by lines of research contrasted through diagnostic imaging, the development of new pharmaceuticals and information technologies at the service of healthcare.

Vicomtech-IK4 expert on URC technologies

  Vicomtech-IK4 will participate as an expert on URC (universal Remote Console) technologies at the Networking Session to be held within the ICT Lyon event next November 25 to 27. The URC technologies are currently being used in different important projects, both in European (I2HOME) and Spanish projects (INREDIS). Therefore these sessions will be useful in every way.

  PhD María Teresa Linaza attended the I+’t’+i (Internet, tourism and innovation) conference held in Medio Cudeyo (Cantabria) last November 7 with the paper entitled ‘Advanced applications for TICs in the Tourist Sector’. The General Director of Technological Development and Innovation of the Government of Cantabria, Mr. Santiago García Blanco, opened the conference. Speakers as important as Mr. Javier Gonzáles-Soria from Google Spain and Ms. Maite López from Segittur attended this conference. 
FORUMTECH 08 conference

  PhD. Maria Teresa Linaza presented her paper 'New experiences in the management of tourist contents' within II Foro de tecnologías audiovisuals en red y nuevos contenidos – forumtech 08, held in Valencia last November 4 and 5. This event, organized by AIDO (Audiovisuales del Instituto Tecnológico de Óptica, Color e Imagen), aims to become an annual meeting point for the emerging audiovisual technologies of the Information and Communication Society.
 
Vicomtech-IK4 promotes new initiatives related to GALILEO
  2008/11/04 
  Representatives of Vicomtech-IK4 and Ms. Pilar Arana, Director of Mobility and Public Transportation of the Local Government in Gipuzkoa managed to make Gipuzkoa participate in the Galileo Masters competition sponsored by the Bavarian State Ministry for Economics, Infrastructure, Transport and Technologies, Germany. The aim of this competition is the promotion of new initiatives on satellite navigation. The main prize of the competition is awarded with EUR 20,000 and the chance to stay in any of the enterprise incubators in the participating regions for six months. 
Vicomtech-IK4 has launched the ‘POINT’ project in Asturias
  2008/10/29 
  PhD. Amalia Ortiz together with other entities in Asturias presented, last October 29, in Colunga, POINT - Tourist Orientation and Information Project -. This project intends to become a reference point within the communication technologies applied in cultural and museum fields. The project that will be developed for the Jurassic Museum of Asturias will have an initial budget of 700.000EUR and will be ready by late 2009. 
Vicomtech-IK4, participating in a leading research project for cancer therapy
  2008/10/21 
  Vicomtech-IK4 participates in the European project NANOTHER, in which nanoparticles used as a diagnostic tool or a therapeutic agent for cancer will be developed. This project, coordinated by GAIKER-IK4 -our partner in the IK4 Research Alliance- includes 18 top-level partners from 8 countries as the critical mass required to achieve ambitious projects objectives. Vicomtech-IK4 participates in the functionalisation and pre-clinical evaluation of the nanoparticles in-vivo using imaging systems, such as MRI, SPECT, PET or fluorescence based imaging. 
Vicomtech-IK4 invited by NATO
  2008/10/17 
  Vicomtech-IK4 has been invited, as Geographical Information Processing and Visual Analysis expert, to the ‘Environmental Security’ workshop within the NATO ‘Science for Peace and Security Programme’. The event took place last October 13-17 at the Buonconsiglio Castle (Trento, Italy) and experts all over the World on security of NASA and the American Government attended this workshop. Dr.-Ing. Jorge Posada, Assitant Manager of Vicomtech-IK4, presented our last works on 3D Geographical Visualization and Image Processing for meteorological phenomena vigilance. The results of this workshop will be published on ‘Springer Science and Business Media’ magazine. 
The European project IMPROVE has been featured in the ICT results

  The IMPROVE project created a series of hardware and software innovations that, once combined, offer a full-specification Virtual Reality and Augmented Reality platform. The prototype of GEOJOKO is now available

  Vicomtech-IK4, together with Cicerone, Eventia, Koma Zerbitzu Kulturalak and Fomento San Sebastián, is working on the development of the prototypes of GEOJOKO. They are mobility games based on context, that allow users to increase their experience with cultural heritage, group memory and urban environment. The current prototype is based on GPS location technology. The contents are geolocated, so that whenever a user walks by a place with associated content, he will be able to see it on the screen of his PDA.
It will be available at the Eventia office (http://www.segwaysansebastian.com/donde.html) from July 24 to the end of August.

Presentation of BIDAIATZERA project

  Vicomtech-IK4 has participated together with Koma Zerbitzu Kulturalak and VILAU Media in the development of the prototype for the BIDAIATZERA project. They have developed an interactive system based on Augmented Reality technologies for recreational and educational applications with tourist, cultural and socio-economical contents. This prototype will be shown at the Museo del Monte Urgull in San Sebastian next July 25, 26 and 27 from 11 am to 8 pm. For further information, it is advisable to watch the video
Vicomtech-IK4 has taken part in the MAC08 conference

  Vicomtech-IK4 has participated in the ‘Innovation on the proximity TV’ session within the 9th Edition of Audiovisual MAC08 in Granollers (Barcelona), where it was debated about the reality on the audiovisual sector and the technological projects of the future. The debate was presided over by Mr. Pedro Mier, chairman of the Spanish Technological Platform eNEM, and chaired by Mr. Julián Seseña, secretary of eNEM. As well as Vicomtech-IK4 representatives of other companies such as Telefónica Servicios Audiovisuales, Abertis, SDA and the Politechnical University of Madrid took part in the debate. 
Vicomtech-IK4 leads an investigation project, finalist on the “Nobel” awards on Audiovisual Innovation

  Vicomtech-IK4 is the technical coordinator of the CineSPACE project, finalist in one of the most important international awards on the field of Culture-New Media, the Stockholm Challenge 2008. Considered the “Nobel” awards of the Audiovisual, this award acknowledges the innovative use of new technologies on social, culture, education, environment and economical development. The project has been developed together with Fomento San Sebastián and other two technological centres in Darmstadt and Glasgow. 
Vicomtech will collaborate with the Bio-Health Institute BioDonostia
  2008/04/14 
  The Biomedical Applications Department of Vicomtech will collaborate with the future Healthcare Research Institute of San Sebastián, BioDonostia, applying the last information technologies to the different lines defined in the Research Plan of the future Institute.
Vicomtech has already been working in collaboration with Hospital Donostia in various projects that were successfully implemented, such as the Collimatrix project, used in the Radiotherapy Service.

  Amalia Ortiz defended her thesis, 'Avatars for Emotional Interaction', last April 9. This way she got her PhD. 
Vicomtech is taking part in the European project MEDNet - Latin American Health Care Network
  2008/03/14 
  The main objective of MEDNet (www.e-mednet.com) is to establish a medical network in Latin America, deploying two pilots in Brazil and Peru, connecting isolated/urban locations in Amazon region to urban cities over AMAZONAS I satellite connectivity. Vicomtech aims at promoting European standards to Latin America for safe and secure medical information storing, exchange and representation.
Other partners of the consortium include two Spanish telecommunications companies - Thales Alenia Space España and Hispasat S.A. 
Change in Management of IK4 Technological Alliance
  2008/02/15 
  José Miguel Erdozain has been appointed General Director of IK4 and Carlos Bastero (CEIT), new President. They both join in their new positions as a result of the reorganization of its Management, carried out by the technological alliance. Every member of the alliance takes the chairmanship in turns. IK4 achieved near € 90 million group-turnover in 2007 and its staff is formed by 1.400 people. By now, the IK4 Technological Alliance is made up by seven technological centres: CEIT, CIDETEC, GAIKER, IDEKO, IKERLAN, TEKNIKER and Vicomtech and, in 2008, three new centres could be joining in. 
Vicomtech gives advice to the Colombian Technological Development Centre
  2008/02/01 
  Vicomtech has given advice to the Colombian Corporación Eco-eficiente (www.corpoeco.org) company in an innovating project in the vision technology area. This project has enabled Vicomtech to collaborate and give advice to leading Colombian industry-companies.
The collaboration with Corporación Eco-eficiente was strengthened by the visit our researcher Carlos Toro made, and who gave a speech on Artificial Vision, Onthologies and Augmented Reality and their application into industry. Engineers and researchers from Sofasa, Haceb, Incolmotos, National University of Colombia … attended this speech. 
MIVTech, a new member of the INI-GraphicsNet
  2008/01/01 
  The 'Multimedia Interaction and Visualization Technologies' (MIVTech – www.mivtech.com) Centre has bee the last to join the international INI-GraphicsNet.
Located at the Ciudad del Saber in Panama, MIVTech has been created as a Joint-Venture between Holding Vallarino and the INI-GraphicsNet Foundation, and will work in the technology transfer and development of some interactive television, simulator and telemedicine projects, fields in which they will collaborate with Vicomtech and other centres of the Foundation.
Vicomtech has been an impulse within this process and is closely working with this new member of the INI-GraphicsNet, first in South America, strengthening its international presence.
