abstract ={Our research focuses on enabling users to interact with 3D graphics and interactive applications with the same content, appearance and interaction paradigm, on different platforms (Internet, Television, and Mobile Devices). The main contribution of this paper is the design and implementation of a platform-independent architecture for 3D graphics and content, validated in the entertainment and tourism sectors. In the case of entertainment, people enjoy communicating with others through virtual characters, also called avatars, e.g. in chat rooms. 3D avatars are being used increasingly and are gaining interest because they are often more visually appealing. As people can choose among different communications platforms, they should also be able to use a virtual character on these platforms to interact with other people at any time and in any place. The interaction of tourists with 3D graphics occurs in two stages of a trip and on two main platforms: the PC when planning their trip on the Internet, and a mobile device while at their destination. Tourist offices invest substantially in virtually recreating some of their most prominent tourism resources, therefore these models should be reusable on several platforms. The general architecture presented in this paper has been validated in several projects that are presented as case studies.},

abstract ={Pluggable user interfaces is a software concept that facilitates adaptation and substitution of user interfaces and their components due to separation of the user interface from backend devices and services. Technically, the concept derives from abstract user interfaces, mainly in the context of device and service control. Abstract user interfaces have been claimed to support benefits such as ease of implementation, support for user-centered design, seamless user interfaces, and ease of use. This paper reports on experiences in employing pluggable user interfaces in the European project i2home, based on the Universal Remote Console framework, and the Universal Control Hub architecture. In summary, our anecdotic evidence supports the claims on the benefits, but also identifies significant costs. The experience reports also include some hints as to how to mitigate the costs.},

Our proposed logic form includes neo-Davidsonian reification in a simple and flat syntax close to natural language. We offer a comparison with other semantic representations such as those provided by Hobbs and Extended WordNet. The Intermediate Logic Forms are straightforwardly obtained from the output of a pipeline consisting of a part-of-speech tagger, a dependency parser and our own Intermediate Logic Form generator (all freely available tools). We apply the pipeline to the glosses of WordNet to obtain a lexical resource ready to be used as knowledge base or resource for a variety of tasks involving some kind of semantic inference. We present a qualitative evaluation of the resource and discuss its possible application in Natural Language Understanding.},

abstract ={This paper presents an accurate real time collision detection algorithm for interactively animated virtual characters using sphere-trees as Bounding Volume Hierarchies. We build upon a fast mathematical method for on-demand sphere refitting during the animation and improve it for being applicable to any object, without dependency on its geometrical level of detail or its dynamic/static behavior. It uses sphere-plane intersection test as the exact test in the collision detection algorithm instead of the usual triangle-triangle one. Corner-trees, a special hierarchy that ensures the utilization of the plane-sphere intersection test is right, are also presented. In the worst case, the optimization decreases in 25% the time needed to process a frame in extreme conditions. The algorithm has been successfully tested on a real time and collaborative 3D virtual world.},

abstract ={AnHitz is a prototype of a virtual Basque-speaking 3D expert that can answer questions or perform cross-lingual searches on science and technology, and show the search results in Basque by means of machine translation. It has been named after the 3-year strategic research project on language, speech and visual technologies for Basque carried out by several organizations, and built as a demonstrator of the technologies developed. Because the six modules comprising AnHitz have been implemented by different organizations using different operating systems, programming languages or libraries, it was impossible to build the demonstrator in a single executable or machine. As a result, the prototype has been constructed using separate programs in various machines that interact using network communication and web services protocols. Despite the employed approach having some drawbacks –mainly higher time delays when audio rendering is done via the web–, the outcome is indeed satisfactory, as it has allowed us to build a fully functional demonstrator that has showed good performance and acceptance in an evaluation made with 50 users, and has made a great impact on the Basque media.}

abstract ={An Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm is an abnormal widening of the aortic vessel at abdominal level, and is usually diagnosed on the basis of radiological images. One of the techniques for Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm repair is Endovascular Repair. The long-term outcome of this surgery is usually difficult to predict in the absence of clearly visible signs, such as leaks, in the images. In this paper, we present a hybrid system that combines data extracted from radiological images and data extracted from the Electronic Patient Record in order to assess the evolution of the aneurysm after the intervention. The results show that the system proposed by this approach yields valuable qualitative and quantitative information for follow-up of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm patients after Endovascular Repair. },

abstract ={A surgical technique currently used in the treatment of Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) is the Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR). This minimally invasive procedure involves inserting a prosthesis in the aortic vessel that excludes the aneurysm from the bloodstream. The stent, once in place acts as a false lumen for the blood current to travel down, and not into the surrounding aneurysm sac. This procedure, therefore, immediately takes the pressure off the aneurysm, which thromboses itself after some time. Nevertheless, in a long term perspective, different complications such as prosthesis displacement or bloodstream leaks into or from the aneurysmatic bulge (endoleaks) could appear causing a pressure elevation and, as a result, increasing the danger of rupture. The purpose of this work is to explore the application of image registration techniques to the visual detection of changes in the thrombus in order to assess the evolution of the aneurysm. Prior to registration, both the lumen and the thrombus are segmented.},

abstract ={Embryos of animal models are becoming widely used to study cardiac development and genetics. However, the analysis of the embryonic heart is still mostly done manually. This is a very laborious and expensive task as each embryo has to be inspected visually by a biologist. We therefore propose to automatically segment the embryonic heart from high-speed fluorescence microscopy image sequences, allowing morphological and functional quantitative features of cardiac activity to be extracted. Several methods are presented and compared within a large range of images, varying in quality, acquisition parameters, and embryos position. Although manual control and visual assessment would still be necessary, the best of our methods has the potential to drastically reduce biologist workload by automating manual segmentation}

abstract ={Augmented Reality (AR) technology consists in adding computer-generated information (2D/3D) to a real video sequence in such a manner that the real and virtual objects appear coexisting in the same world. In order to get a realistic illusion, the real and virtual objects must be properly aligned with respect to each other, which requires a robust real-time tracking strategy - one of the bottlenecks of AR applications. In this paper we describe the limitations and advantages of different optical tracking technologies, and we present our customized implementation of both recursive tracking and tracking by detection approaches. The second approach requires the implementation of a classifier and we propose the use of a Random Forest classifier. We evaluated both approaches in the context of an AR application for design review. Some conclusions regarding the performance of each approach are given.},

abstract ={Virtual Engineering (VE) is defined as the integration of geometric models and related engineering tools (such as analysis, simulation, optimization and decision-making, etc), within a computerized environment that facilitates multidisciplinary and collaborative product development [1]. The focus of Virtual Engineering is to engage the human capacity for evaluation of complex systems and situations [2]. In this article, we present an architecture for the Semantic enhancement of Virtual Engineering Applications (VEA) through their embedded Virtual Engineering Tools. Our architecture follows a User- Intention-Domain schema and makes use of state of the art technologies like theSet of Experience Knowledge Structure and the Reflexive Ontologies in order to offer a better User experience with VEA. The main advantages of using Semantics in VEA can be summarized are: (i) an improved information and embedded Knowledge management, (ii) Enhancements in the search, knowledge and information sharing processes during the use of the VEA, (iii) The use of the intrinsic Knowledge embedded in the elements being described by the VEA and (iv) the empowerment of the User's knowledge and embedding of such knowledge in a structured and explicit conceptualization.},

abstract ={Communities of practice (CoPs) have been taken into account by both practitioners and academics during the last ten years. From a strategic point of view, CoPs have shown their importance for the management of organizational knowledge by offering repositories of knowledge, improved capacity of making knowledge actionable and operational (Brown & Duguid, 1998) and by facilitating main maintenance, reproduction, and extension of knowledge (Brown & Durguid, 2001) . CoPs are also reported to achieve value creation and competitive advantages (Davenport and Prusak, 1998), learning at work (Swan et alt., 2002) that promotes organizational competitiveness (Furlong and Johnson, 2003), innovation, even a radical type (Swan et alt., 2002), responsiveness, improved staff skills and reduced duplication (du Plessis, 2008). This impressive list of achievements is not for free; some authors have pointed out the limits of CoPs (Duguid, 2005; Roberts, 2006; Amin & Roberts, 2008) from diverse points of view, including diversity of working environments, size, spatial or relational proximity, but mainly emphasizing the specificity of CoPs as a social practice paradigm, as it was defined by Wenger (1999, 2000) credited as the “inventor” of the “CoP” (Lave and Wenger, 1991). This chapter focuses on the consideration of CoPs as an organizational reality than can be managed (Thompson, 2005), the contradictions that the idea of managing them generates, and how these controversial points can be overcome in a sound and honest way. To do so, we review different cases of CoP’s within organizations intended for the managerial team to achieve important organizational goals. Our analysis provides: (a) a reflection regarding the Key Success Factors in the process of integrating communities of practice, (b) insight to the structure of a model of cultivation, intended as a guideline for new experiences in this area, and (c) an informative account of this model’s adaptation to the studied organizations.},

abstract ={Hoy en día, uno de los temas de estudio en la Comunidad Europea es como la difusión de las nuevas tecnologías de información y comunicación puede llegar hasta quienes menos posibilidades de acceso tienen a ellas. Dos de los grupos más afectados por esta desconexión con los avances tecnológicos, la denominada “brecha digital”, son las personas mayores y los discapacitados. Uno de los propósitos del Programa Marco de la Unión Europea es la financiación del desarrollo de tecnologías que puedan ser accesibles, entendibles y usables por estos colectivos hasta ahora dejados de lado, y ver cómo estas tecnologías pueden mejorar su calidad de vida y la de sus familiares. Dentro de este contexto, el proyecto “i2home: interacción intuitiva para todas las personas basada en electrodomésticos y dispositivos del hogar basados en estándares industriales” trata de desarrollar tecnologías para todo el mundo, dentro de un consorcio europeo. En España, se está estudiando la aplicación de esta tecnología para mejorar la calidad de vida de personas con diagnóstico de Alzheimer en fase leve a moderada y la de sus cuidadores. }

Our approach extends the SOUPA set of ontologies (Standard Ontology for Ubiquitous and Pervasive Applications) with two new ontologies (i) the Set of Experience Knowledge Structure, used to model the user’s experience and (ii) the AR ontology which models an Augmented Reality environment that is used to enhance the maintenance experience through virtual elements. As test case, we present an application that implements our architecture in different portable devices with video input capabilities such as UMPCs, PDAs and Tablet PCs.}

abstract ={In this paper a videoconference system which has been specifically designed for persons with Alzheimer’s disease is proposed. The system has been designed to be used at home and it aims to improve communication between our target users and their caregivers. To maximize user-friendliness, the videoconference system is integrated into a common television set and, a realistic virtual character (i.e. avatar) that plays the role of a personal videoconference assistant is integrated on the TV set as well. To test the whole concept, a Wizard-of-Oz prototype has been built and then validated with a target group of 8 persons with Alzheimer’s disease. Validations took place at IZA, a day-care centre situated in San Sebastián (Spain) and were conducted by a group of validation and gerontological experts. The results showed that all sample subjects understood the instructions given by the avatar and were able to hold the videoconference satisfactorily.},

abstract ={Recently, there has been an increasing interest to propose computational approaches based on image processing to automate the comparison of spatial gene expression patterns contained in transgenic embryo images. The first step is typically to classify the images between lateral and dorsal/ventral views, and then to align them along the anterior and posterior ends. While some methodologies have been recently proposed for standardizing images in Drosophila database, the case of zebrafish embryos have never been tackled. In this paper, we propose a standardisation methodology for building a zebrafish embryos image database. Details of our approach and the results of using this approach on a pilot dataset are presented. A quality test first allows rejecting images presenting artefacts and which cannot be processed. The retained images are then classified, achieving a success rate of 93%.},

abstract ={This paper presents a new architecture to make TV sets accessible for all. Our proposal is based on the ISO/IEC 24752 Universal Remote Console Framework standard. This standard defines an abstract user interface layer called the 'user interface socket' and allows the development of pluggable user interfaces for any type of user. Since this architecture is standards based, the development of compatible pluggable interfaces is open to any third party. Besides, a prototype of the proposed architecture has been built. In this prototype, the Universal Control Hub (UCH) has been used as the URC framework implementation, a PC with Windows Vista Media Center has been used as a TV Set-top box, and two pluggable UIs have been developed. These UIs consist of an accessible DHTML page for the visually impaired, and a multimodal client, which allows interaction via touch screen and speech. Finally, these two pluggable UIs have been validated with user groups with special needs and preliminary results show encouraging results.},

Several resources, tools and applications have been developed in AnHitz, but we have also integrated many of these into a prototype of a 3D virtual expert on science and technology. It includes Question Answering and Cross Lingual Information Retrieval systems in those areas. The interaction with the system is carried out in Basque (the results of the CLIR module that are not in Basque are translated through Machine Translation) and is speech-based (using Speech Synthesis and Automatic Speech Recognition). The prototype has received ample media coverage and has been greatly welcomed by Basque society. The system has been evaluated by 50 users who have completed a total of 300 tests, showing good performance and acceptance. },

To prevent a possible rupture of the aortic wall, AAAs can be treated non-invasively by means of the Endovascular Aneurysm Repair Technique (EVAR), which consists of placing a stent-graft inside the aorta in order to exclude the bulge from the blood circulation and usually results in its contraction. Nevertheless, the bulge may continue to grow without any apparent leak. In order to effectively assess the changes experienced after surgery, it is necessary to segment the aneurysm, which is a very time-consuming task. Our work focuses on re-utilization of previously modelled information (courses, tasks, evaluations, etc.) in order to maximize the efficiency of the Course Design process while at the same time embedding implicit and experential knowledge of the course designers. abstract ={This work proposes a variation on the Marching Cubes algorithm, where the goal is to represent implicit functions with higher resolution and better graphical quality using the same grid size. The proposed algorithm displaces the vertices of the cubes iteratively until the stop condition is achieved. After each iteration, the difference between the implicit and the explicit representations are reduced, and when the algorithm finishes, the implicit surface representation using the modified cubical grid is more detailed, as the results shall confirm. The proposed algorithm corrects some topological problems that may appear in the discretization process using the original grid.},

abstract ={The use of the endovascular prostheses in Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (EVAR) has proven to be an effective technique to reduce the pressure and rupture risk of aneurysm. Nevertheless, in a long term perspective different complications such as prostheses displacement or leaks inside the aneurysm sac (endoleaks) could appear causing a pressure elevation and increasing the danger of rupture consequently. At present computed tomographic angiography (CTA) is the most commonly used examination for imaging surveillance for stent graft monitoring. However, endoleak complications can not always be detected by visual inspection on CTA scans. The purpose of this work was to study the application of image registration techniques to the detection of changes in the stent graft. Previously we segment the lumen using semi-automatic methods.},

abstract ={In this paper we present computer vision strategies to detect automatically defects on blow-molded plastic tubes used as outer covers of car dampers. A correct quality checking of these tubes is very important as the customers of these pieces are becoming more exigent and, in certain occasions, they reject full sets of thousands of pieces because of some non-valid samples (e.g., a limit of 6 defective tubes per million). The automation of this process is challenging due to the small size of the expected typical defects, the dark color of the molded material and the specular reflection they have. Current standard industrial solutions for this kind of process are not capable of fulfilling the objective. The proposed system uses a laser beam and a single uncalibrated standard camera to scan the tube surface even without the need of any ambient illumination at all. The presented computer vision algorithms reconstruct the tube surface from the observed laser beam deformations and identify the defects by comparing the shape respect to the one expected. Experimental results show the suitability of the proposed methods to detect holes, burrs and deformations on this type of tubes in real time, improving the productivity of the tube quality checking process.},

Therefore, the current main challenge is to index this data in order to make it searchable and reusable. This requires the multimedia content to be annotated in order to create metadata which contains a concise and compact description of the features of the content. Metadata descriptions may vary considerably in terms of comprehensiveness or granularity depending on the tools used. In this paper, we present a new metadata description annotation tool for handling tourist multimedia content based on existing standards. In order to illustrate the performance of the ZERBITUR annotation tool, we designed a prototype and tested it on a relatively small database. },

Providing engaging experiences is a key factor to the success of educational and entertainment products. We have researched how mobile gaming can help tourists and citizens enhancing their experience when interacting with Cultural Heritage. GeoJoko aims at designing and implementing context-based mobile games that will allow users to enhance their experience about Cultural Heritage and collective memory. The prototype includes location technologies that provide the location of each of the players in real time. Contents can be both streamed in real time over the infrastructure provided by the Public Administration within the 'wireless cities' concept or downloaded to the mobile device of the player. This approach is innovative since it exploits the challenge of location-based serious games in order to implement a mobile learning service that supports the user understanding the elements of Cultural Heritage.},

However, the current method of analyzing the embryo heart images is still mainly the manual and visual inspection through the microscope by scoring embryos visually a very laborious and expensive task for the biologist. We propose to automatically segment the embryo cardiac chambers from fluorescent microscopic video sequences, allowing morphological and functional quantitative features of cardiac activity to be extracted. Several methods are presented and compared within a large range of images, varying in quality, acquisition parameters, and embryos position. Despite such variability in the images, the best method reaches a 70% of accuracy, allowing reducing biologists workload by automating some of the tedious manual segmentation tasks.},

In contrast, other applications require the visualization of data that is inherently volumetric. For example, in biomedical imaging, it might be necessary to visualize 3D datasets obtained from CT or MRI scanners as a meaningful 2D image, in a process called volume rendering. As a result of the popularity and usefulness of volume data, a broad class of volume rendering techniques has emerged. Ray casting is one of these techniques. It allows for high quality volume rendering, but is a computationally expensive technique which, with current technology, lacks interactivity when visualizing large datasets, if processed on the CPU. The advent of efficient GPUs, available on almost every modern workstations, combined with their high degree of programmability opens up a wide field of new applications for the graphics cards. Ray casting is among these applications, exhibiting an intrinsic parallelism, in the form of completely independent light rays, which allows to take advantage of the massively parallel architecture of the GPU. This paper describes the implementation and analysis of a set of shaders which allow interactive volume rendering on the GPU by resorting to ray casting techniques. },

abstract ={Biomedical simulation makes use of 3D models as a virtual representation of the anatomy. Although current computer-based training and education systems have used such models, most of them fail to reproduce authentic anatomy, in terms of morphology, texturing and functional behaviour. The production of 3D organic models with a level of realism able to deceive medical professionals is still a challenge. In this paper, we propose to reach the highest level of organic realism allowed by current hardware and software graphics performance. Real-time or interactive rendering is out-of-scope. All the production will be made off-line, with special emphasis on anatomy correctness, realistic illumination and texturing. We propose a generic pipeline to accurately render human anatomy, mainly focusing on hard tissues. A case study is demonstrated in Odontology. }

abstract ={In this article we introduce the necessary elements needed to integrate a decisional technology that offers a level of trust that enables them to be used for the implementation of decisional trust systems. Thus, we refer to this approach as decisional trust, which can be achieved through the use of elements such as decisional DNA, reflexive ontologies, and security technologies. Decisional trust operates on three fronts: (1) the construction of decisional DNA as a knowledge structure capable of collecting an organization's decisional fingerprints; (2) the construction of Reflexive Ontologies as descriptions of concepts and relations with a set of selfcontained queries in a domain of study; and (3) the addition of security technologies. Our approach extends the use of Decisional DNA and Reflexive Ontologies with the aim of offering trustable decisions, and introduces elements for the exploitation of embedded, trustable, decisional knowledge which, added to security elements, can lead to trustable technologies. Fully developed, it would advance the notion of administering trustable knowledge in the current decision making environment}

More specifically, key theoretical notions will be examined linked to the day-to-day events occurred in ARC. This IT-based organization traced an original expansion trajectory based on the creation of two spin-offs during its infancy period. This chapter highlights general concerns associated with knowledge management and the capacity of innovation which emerged during the business expansion process. abstract ={This paper presents the results of the PRISMA project, where a proposal to include a zoom-lens camera into an outdoor marker-less AR system for the cultural tourism sector has been developed and assessed. The key issue of PRISMA is the combination of the commonly known concept of tourist binoculars and AR technologies. PRISMA presents tourist information from a new point of view, allowing the user to interact with multimedia information. An panoramic view from one of the hills of Donostia-San Sebastian city in the North of Spain has been chosen as the real validation environment.},

abstract ={Feature or keypoint matching is a critical task in many computer vision applications, such as optical 3D reconstruction or optical markerless tracking. These applications demand very accurate and fast matching techniques. We present an evaluation and comparison of two keypoint matching strategies based on supervised classification for markerless tracking of planar surfaces. We have applied these approaches on an augmented reality prototype for indoor and outdoor design review.}

abstract ={Augmented reality (AR) is a very promising technology that can be applied in many areas such as healthcare, broadcasting or manufacturing industries. One of the bottlenecks of such application is a robust real-time optical markerless tracking strategy. In this paper we focus on the development of tracking by detection for plane homography estimation. Feature or keypoint matching is a critical task in such approach. We propose to apply machine learning techniques to solve this problem. We present an evaluation of an optical tracking implementation based on Random Forest classifier. The implementation has been successfully applied to indoor and outdoor augmented reality design review application.}

It consists in evaluating the possibility of an implant surgery, studying the jaws and teeth structure. The software provides 3D and specific 2D visualisation, with a few tools for analysing the patient mandibles. This software uses a large amount of date: X-ray image files and study and patient (and more) information. There was no database, nor data structure, nor manager. First the data structure was designed, and then the database, to keep all the data. Next, the manager was implemented, with a few functionalities (sorting, selecting, loading, saving). At last, the different inputs and outputs: importing and exporting (xml format), and creation from the specific medical image data files (DICOM). }

abstract ={Globalization and the digitalization of data and automation of the processes involved in information management, have turn most of nowadays design companies deeply dependent on their information systems. The description of information management systems in design environments usually include terms that belong to different fields of knowledge whose definitions are similar but as they are being provided by different areas of knowledge and multidisciplinary teams, heterogeneous information sources and collaborative working tools need to be developed. Very important efforts are being presented by the scientific community in order to improve the information management systems in design environments. However actual systems could be improved by the use of semantic technologies in order to enhance their accuracy and efficiency with the consequent reduction in time and money derived from such outcomes. In this paper we present a possible architecture of a module that provides semantic services (The Meta Level) which has been developed within the framework of a European project called WIDE. In our presented approach the main focus is to improve the information management in a design environment by means of semantics using an alternative (cyclic) information retrieval paradigm that is supported strongly on the most recent semantic technologies. The presented architecture could be easily adaptable to different systems, facilitating the implementation of such information handling in other fields in where retrieval of information could be needed.},

abstract ={L’objectif du projet est d’automatiser les analyses in vivo faites habituellement á la main par les chercheurs biologistes. La mise en place d’un tel système pourrait accélérer considérablement le développement des nouveaux traitements pharmaceutiques, en réduisant notamment la durée de la phase pré-clinique. Concrètement, il s’agit dans notre cas, d’utiliser des embryons de poissons zèbres exprimant une protéine de fluorescence (GFP) ; ceci permet d’observer les organes grâce à un microscope à fluorescence, et dans notre cas en particulier son cœur. A partir d’une vidéo du cœur, il s´agit de détecter et classifier différents phénotypes morphologiques et fonctionnels (morphologie cardiaque, volume des cavités cardiaques, fréquence cardiaque, arythmie cardiaque, etc.) grâce à des méthodes d’analyse et de traitement d’image avancées. En réalisant des expérimentations à grande échelle, on peut alors fournir des données statistiques sur les effets (bénéfiques ou néfastes) de telle ou telle substance sur le cœur de poisson zèbre. }

abstract ={Information retrieval often suffers from the lack of suitable search tools or the query complexity. The search of some concrete information on the base of file names or the coincidental occurrence of key words in files is little helpful because the obtainable matches are too much subject to chance. Therefore an effective search must be based on the semantic interpretation of the query and additionally casts of the query into the context of an application domain. Here the development of the search machine prototype WIDE is presented, which builds up the query interpretation on Semantic Web techniques. The search machine can be configured for application domains and is able to map a query to different data sources in parallel. The search machine processes the retrieved results graphically and associates the concepts used in the Query with thematically related concepts. The search machine can be used to retrieve text documents or test bed results of experiments archived in ASAMODS data sources.}

abstract ={Large Model Visualisation for industrial plant review is a well researched area in Computer Graphics. The possibility to have interactive walkthroughs for these very large geometric datasets offers clear benefits as it reduces design time and allows the engineers and designers to detect potential problems in the early stages of the construction phase. A common characteristic of most LMV approaches is to work on the basis of the already tessellated CAD model by applying advanced CG techniques. No special attention is given to the fact that these models were originally composed of a defined set of repeating engineering parts that do have semantics. The semantic information about these parts is already lost during the conversion process from the CAD to the VR model, valuable information that may improve the visualisation and compression significantly. The developed techniques are included into the MiroWalk LMV walkthrough system that allows interactive walkthrough of plant models on desktop-class hardware.}

A Methodology for the Semantic Visualization of Industrial Plant CAD Models for Virtual Reality Walkthroughs

abstract ={There are still many open questions and needs in important aspects of the scientific area of Large Model Visualization - LMV - for Plant Design. Performance to achieve interactive rates in immersive virtual environments is certainly one of them, especially if resources are limited, but not anymore the most critical one. Surprisingly, the different processes used today to generate the walkthroughs experiences take into account very few explicit semantic considerations. The main approaches presented in the literature in the field of LMV are mainly related to algorithms and comression methods to be applied to the geometric entities that compose the CAD model. However, no sufficient attention is given to the following aspects: (i) These models actually belong to a special engineering domain with related standards; (ii) the different potential users have diverse backgrounds and intentions; and (iii) an adapted visualization walkthrough of the model can be different for a specific user and purpose in that context, in order to use in an optimal way the available resources and techniques. Therefore, the most common situation is that the generation of visual walkthrough experiences is typically not aware (in proprietary systems with links to PDM the situation is better to some extent) that the 3D CAD model of a plant is actually just a geometric representation of a complex engineering system, and this kowledge is not sufficiently exploited in the generation of the walkthrough experience. The consequence is to have advanced VR environments for the interactive exploration of models of millions of triangles, that have little explicit use of the klowledge - and in many cases none - about the domain, users and visualization purposes involved. As a result, the main motivation for the present work is focused on one of this research lines not sufficiently covered so far: The explicit introduction of semantic aspects, pushed from an engineering domain perspective - and strongly complemented with computer graphics and semantic technologies-, in the process of generating visual walkthrough experiences for specific users, visualization purposes and resources in the Plant Desing domain.}
